The construction of the freeway between Windhoek and the Hosea Kutako International Airport had been earmarked since the mid-seventies. A route determination study was done in 1971, followed with a Basic Design and Report in 1978, the latter which still today forms the basis for the detail design of this freeway.
The project is sub-divided into 3 phases (Phases 1, 2A and 2B) because of the urgency Government has attached to the project,
The project is situated along Trunk Road 9 Section 1 between Windhoek and Hosea Kutako International Airport. It forms part of the third phase of the construction of Trunk Road 9 Section 1 to freeway standards.
Phase 2 covers the section between Sam Nujoma Interchange and east of the Hosea Kutako International Airport. Sub-phase 2A covers the section up to a point just east of the Kapps Farm Interchange over a distance of 19.5km, with Phase 2B covering 21.3km.
Scope:
PTS-S caried out the design, supply & installation of multi-strand bonded post tensioning for all the bridges on this phase of the project, which consisted of 6 bridges spread over 4 interchanges as follows:
